Penpot is the most exciting open-source design tool since Blender disrupted 3D. The free tier is remarkable — unlimited files, unlimited collaborators, and the full feature set with no artificial limits. Building on open web standards (SVG, CSS Grid) means your designs aren't trapped in a proprietary format. The self-hosting option is a dream for security-conscious organisations. The honest downside: the design tools aren't as polished as Figma's, the component system is less mature, and the plugin ecosystem is still small. But Penpot is improving fast and it's already good enough for most UI design work.
